Veteran Organization Prioritizes Pedestrian Safety
Liberation Veteran Services (LVS) is prioritizing pedestrian safety as it prepares to welcome the first residents of Veterans Village, located on the campus of Liberation Church on Midlothian Turnpike. The 50-unit micro-apartment community is for Veterans transitioning out of homelessness. Veterans live at the site free of charge for an average of six to eight months before moving into permanent housing.
“The Liberation Campus collectively serves more than 7,000 city residents monthly. For years, this parking lot has been very chaotic. There were no speed bumps, directional signage, ADA pathways for pedestrians, or any other technology to make the roughly 15-acre parking lot safer for pedestrians,” said LVS CEO Jay Patrick. “We have worked closely with the City of Richmond and performed our due diligence to make sure all changes to the property promote the safety and wellbeing of our community. No one should be injured or lose their life while crossing the street. It takes collective concern, compassion and care for your neighbors to implement.” David Harris, LVS Board Member and Veteran, shared, “There have been 6-7 pedestrian deaths in the past several weeks in Richmond, and we want to be proactive.”
LVS is installing a new ADA-compliant pedestrian pathway and aligning its efforts with Mayor Danny Avula’s Vision Zero strategy to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. The pathway is designed to allow residents and visitors to travel safely from public transportation and local walkways to the campus. “Safety is a shared responsibility, and Liberation Veteran Services is leading by example,” says Mayor Avula. “By prioritizing pedestrian safety in their new design, they’re showing how thoughtful planning can protect lives and strengthen community. This is what Vision Zero is all about—creating spaces where everyone can move safely and with dignity. I’m proud to see this kind of leadership and hope it inspires others to take similar steps across Richmond.”
